Decree: Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Recently, there have been several reports about the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and its status as a Holy Day of Obligation in the media.

Consequently, and in accord with canon 87, §1, I therefore issue this decree establishing the following:  the obligation linked to the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which has been transferred to Monday, December 9, 2024, is hereby dispensed in the Diocese of Joliet. No member of the Catholic Faithful in this Diocese is obligated to attend Mass on December 9, 2024.

Because the Blessed Mother is the Patroness of the United States under the title of the Immaculate Conception, I still encourage your participation at Mass and your devotion to the Immaculate Conception.

Given at this Chancery, Blanchette Catholic Center, on this 30th day of October 2024.
